As an acupuncturist, I have always been interested in this topic and I am passionate to observe the difference between acupuncture and Botox in my own practise, and the advantages and disadvantages to each.

Let’s talk about the cosmetic acupuncture first, the newest weapon in the anti-aging war.

Cosmetic acupuncture (also known as facial rejuvenation) is the insertion of extremely fine needles into the skin based on no harsh chemicals or invasive surgery, and it is a natural approach to improving your appearance.

There are a few of mechanisms as to why cosmetic acupuncture works. Cosmetic acupuncture treatment is also is based on YIN-YANG and QI overall concept and the medical treatment of health problems in a powerful weapon, the relevant organs of thinking. Our skin reflects your general health and any specific issues or conditions you may have. The sense of needles can go internally to prevent issues in the first place.

Internally, our spleen provides the source of blood and qi (vital energy or life force), and the lung is responsible for disseminating the blood and qi to the skin. These two organs ensure the skin is constantly nourished; however, other organs also attribute to the smoothness of the circulation. Along with the aging process, a sluggish metabolic rate and an excess of waste products will inevitably lead to malnourished skin causing dullness, wrinkles, age spots, dryness and hair loss as well as brittle and deformed nails. Acupuncture claims that the texture and elasticity of skin can be improved by replenishing blood and activating its circulation & nourishing yin (the cooler fresh essence) for lubrication.

Therefore, cosmetic acupuncture can be a natural, chemical-free and non-invasive, which can alternative to Botox, chemical peels and micro derma abrasion. A beautifying treatment with minimal side effects, less risk and at a lower cost than many other cosmetic procedures.

However, the effect of cosmetic acupuncture has little scientific basis and there are still many skeptics who criticize acupuncture is only playing a placebo role.

Now, let’s look at Botox. You may have read about Botox cosmetic in advertisements, blogs, and celebrity gossip magazines, or heard about it from your friends. But there are a lot of misconceptions about Botox treatment and how it is used.

Botox cosmetic has been available by prescription in the united states since the FDA approved it in 2002. The exact same Botox injected for medical purposes (such as uncontrolled muscle spasms) was first approved by the FDA in 1989. Botox cosmetic is FDA-approved to smooth the frown lines between your eyebrows though it is used off-label for other facial wrinkles as well.

The procedure time of Botox is about 10 minutes; the typical results are smoother, younger-looking skin; lasts about three to six months; the recovery time is a couple of days to a week to see full effects; the cost of Botox is approximately around $12 per unit $250 one area $450 two areas $500 three areas in Wellington, New Zealand.

However, the injection can be quite painful and the effects usually last 3-4 months after which repeat treatments are required to maintain the effect. It is unknown what the long-term health effects of regular Botox injections are.

Immediate side effects can include pain, headache, stomach ache, and flu-like symptoms.

Common side effects are an excessive weakness of facial muscles, excessive elevation of the lateral brow, drooping eyelid, double vision, numbness, pins and needles, excessive tearing, decreased eye closure and dry eyes.

If something goes wrong or there is a bad reaction, it could cause problems with swallowing and breathing, and also it can take weeks or even months to get back to normal.

In general, It is a matter of personal preference, as most of the female would like to maintain a lift, firm, glowing skin.
